Plating FAQ

What is hard chrome plating?

Hard chrome plating is a process in which chromium is deposited to a surface for improved wear resistance, lubricity, oil retention, and other wear purposes.

Does the quality of hard chrome plating matter?

Yes, it does. In fact, a low-quality chrome is much worse than no chroming at all. Chrome plating is a barrier layer plating and once the barrier is broken, rusting and other deformities happen rapidly.

What kind of materials can be processed?

Almost all types of metals can be hard chrome plated, with the exception of Aluminium, Titanium, Magnesium, and Zinc. The most common types of plated metals include stainless steel, steel, copper, bronze, cast iron, and brass.

How long does a hard-chromed surface last?

Depending on the environment and working condition the chrome is exposed to, hard chrome plating generally extends the wear life of the base material by 2 to 10 times.

Can you do it yourself?

Before thinking about doing it yourself, here is a food for thought.

Chrome plating requires a certain level of expertise and the use of appropriate tools and machinery. It is also a process that requires great care because doing a poor job could make the metal much worse.

Is all hard chrome plating the same?

Not quite. There are generally two different types of chrome plating, hard and decorative. Hard chrome plating is used for wear resistance while decorative chrome plating is used for aesthetic purposes.

Is hard chrome plating magnetic?

Hard chrome plating is a non-magnetic coating.

Can a hard chrome plated metal rust?

Although hard chrome plating arms a metal with excellent corrosion resistant properties, it has a micro-crack structure and will rust over extended periods of time in wet environments.
